IV Sedation Dentistry in Oklahoma City

IV sedation dentistry at Progressive Dental in Oklahoma City can help suitable patients manage anxiety during dental treatment. Tell us about past experiences, a strong gag reflex, or a longer procedure you are worried about. We review your health and medications before recommending a sedation plan.

Personal care, useful technology

A clear approach to Sedation Dentistry

Dental fear is common and nothing to be embarrassed about. We combine clear communication, pacing, local anesthetic, and available sedation options to make care more manageable while maintaining appropriate monitoring and instructions.

Progressive Dental serves children and adults from South Oklahoma City and surrounding communities. Our small team takes time to listen, show you what we see, and separate urgent needs from care that can be planned over time.

Is this care right for you?

Start with a careful diagnosis.

Adults with dental anxiety, difficult past experiences, a sensitive gag reflex, or treatment needs that may be easier to complete with added support.

No webpage can diagnose a dental condition. A visit lets us evaluate your specific situation and explain benefits, risks, costs, timing, and alternatives before you choose treatment.

Care built around the person

Choosing sedation with confidence

What is IV sedation dentistry?

IV sedation uses medication delivered through a vein to help you relax during dental treatment. It differs from taking an oral medication or breathing nitrous oxide. Your sedation plan determines the level of relaxation and monitoring required. Sedation does not automatically mean general anesthesia or complete unconsciousness; our team explains the intended level before treatment.

Who may benefit from IV sedation?

Patients with significant dental anxiety, difficult previous experiences, a sensitive gag reflex, or a longer treatment plan may want to discuss IV sedation. An evaluation is essential. Medical conditions, airway concerns, pregnancy, medications, alcohol or other substance use, and previous anesthesia reactions can change the recommendation. Bring an up-to-date medication list and tell us about sleep apnea or breathing problems.

Planning a comfortable dental visit

Before your appointment, we discuss the dental work, alternatives for comfort, and whether IV sedation fits your needs. Local anesthetic may still be used to numb the treatment area. Ask who will administer sedation, what monitoring is planned, and what to expect during the procedure. Our team provides instructions specific to your treatment rather than asking you to guess about food, drinks, or medications.

Preparation and getting home

Follow the eating and drinking instructions you receive from the practice. Do not stop or change prescription medication on your own; ask the team which medicines to take before the visit. Arrange a responsible adult to bring you home and help afterward as directed. Plan time away from driving, work that requires judgment, and important decisions until your care team says these activities are appropriate.

IV sedation for crowns and implant treatment

Comfort planning can be part of a visit for crowns, dental implants, or full-arch treatment. The decision depends on the planned procedure and your health, not just the name of the service. Ask for an estimate that separates the dental treatment from sedation charges. Insurance coverage varies, and our team can help review benefits before you commit.

Recovery and follow-up

Drowsiness and impaired coordination can continue after the appointment. Follow the written recovery instructions and have your escort help with them. The dental procedure may have its own eating, activity, and home-care requirements. Call the office with questions about your recovery; seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing or another medical emergency.

What to expect

Your Sedation Dentistry visit

Every plan is individualized, but the process usually begins with these four steps:

  • Discuss anxiety, previous experiences, and treatment needs
  • Review medications, medical history, and safety considerations
  • Explain the appropriate comfort or sedation options
  • Provide preparation, transportation, and recovery instructions

No-pressure planning

Understand the options before deciding.

We will tell you what we found, what may happen without treatment, and which options fit your priorities. When more than one path is reasonable, we compare them plainly. When a specialist would provide the best care, we say so.

Insurance coverage varies by plan. Our team can help estimate benefits and out-of-pocket costs, but your insurer makes the final coverage decision.

Common questions

Questions about Sedation Dentistry

Will I be asleep?

That depends on the type of sedation. Some options help you relax while remaining responsive; deeper levels have different requirements. We will clearly explain what to expect.

Will I need someone to drive me?

Many sedation options require a responsible adult to bring you home and stay with you. Follow the instructions provided for your specific plan.

Is sedation right for everyone?

No. Medical history, medications, pregnancy, airway considerations, and the planned procedure all affect what is appropriate.
